Projects
My newest project incorporates not only woodworking but my love of making music. A cajon is a Peruvian folk instrument that is basically a box with a sound hole and a thin face plate that has a loose corner to produce a slap when struck. I call my version “Fat Smack” because it’s design produces a big deep low tone as well as a sharp defined smack sound. This is a professional quality instrument unlike some of the examples being sold now in music stores.
I do basically any job that involves woodworking. Slipped Disc Audio, a recording and mastering studio owned by Bill McElroy in Ashland VA., was one such endeavor. Meticulous detail has to be employed in the construction of sound controlled environments. Sound proofing, diffusion and absorption had to all be taken into account in designing the elements for Slipped Disc. The control room monitors were a particularly unique challenge. The interior of the speaker cabinets are a tapered labyrinth (“transmission line”) lined with acoustic foam and filled with a special stuffing to slow the low frequency sound waves.
Custom designed front entry doors are particularly popular, and I have made a variety of both solid wood and glass panel examples . Mantles, radiator covers and all types of architectural elements have also been designed and built. Feel free to contact me to discuss any special requests.
